Hell in a Cell

With the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in the WWE just around the corner, I decided I would weigh in on my thoughts of the ppv concept and my favorite Cell match. I have felt for quite some time, and I know I am not alone on this, have felt that World Wrestling Entertainment needed to do something to freshen up the state of their ppv’s: To either cut down the number of shows every years and/or have larger shows to trim down that number. Or to simply try something new…Trying something new has been the most embraced option so far this year. I like the big show that have been established over the years like The Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summer Slam, and Survivor Series. These shows and concepts have proven tried and true becoming stables in the WWE ppv house. Breaking point was a step in the right direction in my view, it was definitely a little different from the way things usually go. That said, Hell in a Cell is yet another step in the proper direction to try and make concepts and shows a little fresher. Upon first learned of the ppv and understand how the concept would go down, I certain had doubts. Hell in a Cell was always reserved for something a little extra special…to give the match and/or feud that extra boost to make it that much more violent and reserved for two stars to wreck each other. Of course, from time to time, the Cell is opened and the carnage spill out all over the floor or even on top of the cage itself. Truthfully, I have no real problem with that if done correctly and tastefully to serve the match or even story-line. If WWE can manage to pace and manicure these main events like they did at Breaking Point, I feel it can work better than most fans and critics might think. There is a chance that I could be wrong, but I don’t feel like I am. Of course, none of us will know until the show actually airs and plays out.

Alright, I’ve done some major thinking on this subject and I have come up with a definitive answer. What is my very favorite Hell in a Cell match?  It has to be Shawn Michaels vs Triple H at Badd Blood in 2004! That match was one of and still is one of the best matches I have ever seen to this day. These two veterans gave every single thing there was to give in this match. Blood and tables and one hell of a story told with every spot. I have watched this match at least a dozen times or more and I discover something new with every single watch. I felt that this was an instant classic and was easily a match of the year candidate. If you have not seen it, please find a way. If you are a true wrestling fan, this match is for you.

  1. I’m a little torn on this subject. I like the idea of this ppv, simply for the reason that they are trying something new. And they’re open to new ideas and not sticking with their normal formula. What I don’t like about this is if they choose to keep this, it kind of takes that part of the surprise and drama out of the story. Like when TLo announced the match for Taker and Punk. We all knew it was going to be HiaC. Had it not been a HiaC themed PPV, we would have gotten a little more excited at the news.

I had a friend compare this ppv to No Way Out and the Elimiation Chamber. We all know NWO = EC. But it’s okay because the EC is a little grander and much more complicated. So it makes sense for it to be a specialized, NWO exclusive match. Not so much with the HiaC match.

Favorite Hell in a Cell match? For me it’d be the original. Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. It was a new concept. A storied feud. Two guys who were at the top of the WWE. Just everything about it was so fresh. And the match itself, although Taker lost, was great. Great spots. A lot of drama. It was just great.
